Do Corns on the Top of Toes Require Surgery

Table of Contents

Even though foot corns are mostly harmless and even asymptomatic in most cases, no skin condition should be taken lightly or ignored. But do corns on the top of toes require surgery or can you take care of it yourself? While there are some home remedies, corn removal surgery is the most effective method.

Can You Have Corns on Top of Toes?

Foot corns are a skin condition that is caused by friction between the skin on your foot and usually inappropriate footwear on the other side. Since it’s caused by friction, a foot corn can form pretty much anywhere on the foot – on the toes, in between toes (soft corns,) on the bottom of the feet, and so on. However, foot corns on top of toes seem to be the most common kind.

Even though foot corns are usually harmless and asymptomatic, that’s not always the case. Sometimes, symptoms of foot corns can be pretty strong and cause a lot of discomfort, especially if they’re located on top of your toes. They can become red and cause itchiness, and they can also be quite painful when pressure is applied directly on them. That means foot corns on your toes could make everyday activities such as running or even walking much harder, or even unbearable. So, it’s very important not to leave your foot corns untreated

There are many ways you can get rid of foot corns. For starters, you can try out one of the countless home remedies people swear by. However, none of them are 100% effective, and they might not work out for you. After that, you can try out some of the over-the-counter products that could help, such as the medicated skin patches filled with salicylic acid.

If none of the previous methods work for you, it might be time to consider surgery. Even though it’s minimally invasive, all podiatrists advise you to use it as a last resort because it still is a medical procedure, and you should never undergo any unnecessary procedures if you can avoid it. However, surgery is recommended and required in some more serious cases.

When Surgery May Be Necessary for Corns on the Top of Toes

Surgery is always meant to be a last resort; however, in some cases, it’s necessary. For starters, if you notice any signs of infection around your foot corn, you need to go see a doctor immediately and have them remove the corn surgically in order to stop the infection from spreading and causing more damage. Some signs of an infection could be redness, a burning sensation, puss, and so on. You should also have your corn surgically removed if there are some other health issues that could contribute to the severity of this skin condition, such as diabetes or other blood circulation issues.

How to Prepare for the Surgery?

The good news is that there is no special preparation for the surgery required on your part. All you have to do is avoid some medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to ask us.

How Long Does the Recovery Last?

Even though it’s minimally invasive, corn removal surgery is still surgery, and there is some recovery time involved. You will be instructed to rest and elevate your foot for a minimum of 48 hours after the surgery to prevent pain and swelling and keep it away from water for a while until the incisions heal. The total recovery time is anywhere from 6 weeks up to 3 months.

Is Surgery Covered by the Insurance?

Depending on your health insurance policy, most private health insurance companies should cover at least part of the cost of the surgery, if not the entire amount.
